Why The Cathartic?
Why this title? What are our aims?
The title page is inspired by a student publication The Cathartic, spasm 1 which was published in 1921. Like other student productions it fell foul of UCT authorities and was banned more than once because of controversial content. It was replaced by an annual medical student publication called iNyanga. The current Faculty of Health Sciences student publication containing contemporaneous material is called Pulse. The common purpose of such publications is communication with a specific target audience, e.g.:
- Local health practitioners to keep in touch
- Overseas alumni still very keen to be kept informed
- Retired health personnel who still enjoy keeping in touch and up-to-date with developments
We are proud of our alumni and our main aim is to retain contact. We would like to hear about your progress and would like to keep you up to date on developments at the Faculty of Health Sciences. Since effective communication is a two-way process, we welcome comment, criticism or praise. A cathartic from time to time may be good for us.
