About us
The Department of Anaesthesia is located in Groote Schuur Hospital, the main teaching hospital of the University of Cape Town.
Anaesthesia services are provided to all teaching hospitals affiliated to the University of Cape Town's Faculty of Health Sciences. These include:
- New Somerset Hospital, Green Point
- Mowbray Maternity Hospital, Mowbray
- Valkenberg Psychiatric Hospital, Observatory
- 2 Military Hospital, Wynberg
- Maitland Cottage Hospital, Newlands
- Red Cross War Memorial Children's Hospital, Rondebosch
At the Red Cross War Memorial Children's Hospital - the only dedicated children's facility in Sub-Saharan Africa - Paediatric Anaesthesia is provided for children up to the age of 13 years, with special interests in cardiac surgery (including heart transplants), liver transplants and the separation of conjoined twins.
The departments of Anaesthesia and Respiratory Medicine (Department of Medicine) jointly manage the Respiratory Intensive Care Unit, dealing with non-cardiac medical, surgical and respiratory patients.
The Department of Anaesthesia supports the Surgical Intensive Care Unit (Department of Surgery), the Cardiac Surgery Intensive Care Unit (Cardiothoracic Surgery Division, Department of Surgery) and the multi-discipline Paediatric Intensive Care Unit at Red Cross Children's Hospital.
