About us
The Department of Clinical Laboratory Sciences (CLS) comprises nine divisions:
- Anatomical Pathology
- Chemical Pathology
- Forensic Medicine and Toxicology
- Haematology
- Human Genetics
- Immunology
- Medical Biochemistry
- Medical Microbiology
- Medical Virology
and two units:
- Computational Biology
- Gender Health and Justice Research Unit
The Department of Clinical Laboratory Sciences (CLS) is an amalgamation of the former pathology departments (Anatomical Pathology, Chemical Pathology, Forensic Medicine, Haematology, Immunology, Medical Microbiology and Virology), as well as Human Genetics and Medical Biochemistry.
Thus, the composition and activities of the CLS reflect those of its constituent Divisions. These include the teaching and training of undergraduate and postgraduate students, conducting basic and applied research and the provision of diagnostic laboratory services.
The complexity of the CLS is mirrored in the composition of its staff, which is drawn from the University of Cape Town, Groote Schuur Hospital, Red Cross War Memorial Children's Hospital, the National Health Laboratory Service, and the Medical Research Council. There are also Wellcome Trust Senior Research Fellows in the CLS.
CLS Directorate Office
The Directorate office forms the Teaching and Administrative HUB of the department.
The department teaches the second and third year MBChB students and the course convenor for these courses, together with an admin infrastructure, are housed in the HUB as well as the finance and general admin activities for the department. The formation of the Pathology Learning Centre is a departmental initiative which will form part of the learning platform for all students in the Faculty and will be housed in the mortuary building when it is vacated.
