The Department of Medicine boasts a strengths in undifferentiated, specialist-level General Medicine in secondary and tertiary-level hospitals.
Acute Tertiary Medicine Unit
This unit retains two medical wards at Groote Schuur Hospital with a very small secondary component. Tertiary-level patients referred in from our district hospitals occupy most of the beds. A team of physicians with interests and expertise in general medicine, skilled in handling undifferentiated problems, cares for patients in these wards. They call upon the services of the sub-specialist divisions as needed.
General Medicine
Over the last five years, the Department of Medicine has significantly reshaped this service so that most of the secondary-level beds are located at district hospitals in the Cape Town metropole, such as Somerset, GF Jooste and Victoria hospitals.
