The Division of Hepatology incorporates the Liver and Porphyria Clinics associated with Groote Schuur Hospital, as well as the Liver Research Centre, a research institution established at the University of Cape Town by the South African Medical Research Council.
The division offers highly specialised services, such as dedicated hepatological expertise, liver transplantation services and a unique porphyria diagnostic and clinical service, coupled with both clinical and laboratory-based research on liver disease and porphyria. These services are not available elsewhere in Southern Africa.
The Department of Medicine has had a special interest in porphyria for more than 50 years. This stems from the work of Prof Lennox Eales, one of the field's original investigators who gained worldwide renown for his work. The Porphyria Research Unit was incorporated into the Liver Research Centre following his retirement. This division remains one of the world's leading centres for porphyria research and clinical expertise.
