Nursing & Midwifery

About us

The University of Cape Town became, in 1937, one of the first two universities in South Africa to have Nurses on Campus. Nurses and midwives comprise the largest group of healthcare professionals in South Africa, and the Division of Nursing and Midwifery has been preparing nurses to meet South Africa's healthcare challenges since 1972.

Health-based curricula were introduced in 1984 to focus extensively on the whole person, as well as family and community health. This has allowed nurses to play a more flexible role in meeting changing healthcare needs.

The division, therefore, is committed to the development of competent, caring and autonomous professional nurses and midwives capable of creative and critical thought. In striving to redress the academic isolation of diploma-based nursing education, the Division of Nursing and Midwifery offers appropriate, flexible and accessible education to nurses and midwives.

Nurses and Midwives comprise the largest group of health care providers in South Africa. We are committed to facilitating the development of competent, caring and autonomous professional nurses and midwives who are capable of creative and critical thought. In striving to redress the historic academic isolation of diploma nursing education, the Division of Nursing and Midwifery is committed to offering flexible, accessible education to nurses and midwives in order to facilitate the provision of appropriate health care for the peoples of South Africa.

The Division of Nursing and Midwifery offers postgraduate programmes in Nursing and Midwifery.
