About the Chris Barnard Division of Cardiothoracic Surgery

The Chris Barnard Division of Cardiothoracic Surgery comprises Adult Cardiac Surgery and Thoracic Surgery at Groote Schuur and UCT Private Academic Hospitals, and Paediatric Cardiac Surgery at Red Cross Children's Hospital, offering both clinical and training services.

Under the leadership of Professor Peter Zilla, the Division has restructured and now offers a top-class facility for both indigent and medical aid patients alike, which also encourages a strong commitment to research - paralleling the enthusiasm of Professor Christiaan Neethling Barnard which led to the first human-to-human heart transplant performed by him on 17 December 1967.
