Congratulations to Associate Professor John Ataguba, Director of Health Economics, for being selected to the World Economic Forum (WEF) Global Future Council on Health and Healthcare. 

Dr Charle Viljoen, of the Department of Medicine was awarded the 2018 International Resident Leadership Award by the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada. This award is given annually to an international resident who has demonstrated leadership in specialty education and encourages the development of future leaders in medicine.

Storehouses of institutional memory

Children, Families and the State: Collaboration and Contestation

Over 6 million children in South Africa still live below the food poverty line. This means that their families cannot even provide the minimum amount of nutrition needed to survive and thrive. This is just one of the many challenges faced by families in SA.

PredART trial publication

The results of the PredART trial have been published  in the New England Journal of Medicine. Researchers from UCT and the Institute of Tropical Medicine (Belgium) have shown that a four-week course of moderate dose prednisone reduced the risk of tuberculosis-associated immune reconstitution inflammatory syndrome (TB-IRIS) by 30% in HIV-positive patients.
