Welcome to the Faculty of Health Sciences. The faculty is recognised nationally and internationally as an outstanding institution for the training of health care workers, research and clinical service.
UCT alumnus, sports scientist and reigning Mr South Africa, Dr Habib Noorbhai, has published his first book, Heart, a guide to inspire people to live empowered, socially conscious lives. The book will be launched on 27 November.
On the 18 October 2017, Prof. Karen Sliwa was awarded an Honorary Doctoral degree by Paris Diderot, Sorbonne University in recognition of the extensive work that she has done in South Africa, Africa and the world at large predominantly in the fields of Clinical and Pathophysiological research in Cardiovascular disease in pregnancy and post-partum.
Established over 100 years ago in 1912, the Faculty is the oldest medical school in sub-Saharan Africa, and the top-rated on the continent. With a stellar reputation in education and research we were ranked 48th in the 2014 Times Higher Education World University Rankings.
The Faculty of Health Sciences research enterprise aims to advance and encourage excellent research, in the context of the vision and mission of the Faculty and of the University of Cape Town. We lead high-quality research programmes, train future research leaders, and provide advice and counsel to health organisations around the world.

To be "an outstanding teaching and research Faculty, educating for life and addressing the challenges facing our society. Within this, we recognize our historical context and our location in Africa, and strive to play an active developmental role in the cultural, economic, political, scientific and social environment of South Africa and the African continent".
