Rheumatic Heart Disease Wellness Event

On the 6th of August 2015 approximately 250 patients at Groote Schuur Hospital (GSH) being treated for Rheumatic Heart Disease (RHD), a disease that affects the valves of the heart, attended the annual Wellness Fair.  These GSH patients are among over 3000 participants in a two-year study of the disease from sites in Africa, India and Yemen.

World Heart Federation - Cardiovascular experts from South Africa and Canada have announced plans to perform the largest ever global studies of patients with rheumatic heart disease (RHD), a disease which currently kills approximately 233,000 people per year, despite being almost entirely preventable.

This historic decision marks the first time that Rheumatic Fever (RF) and Rheumatic Heart Disease (RHD) have been recognised as global health priorities on the world stage. Representing South Africa at the event was the newly-elected President of Reach, A/Prof Liesl Zuhlke from Red Cross Childrens Hospital  and WHF President-elect Prof Karen Sliwa, director of the Hatter Institute.
