The Division of Nuclear Medicine at the University of Cape Town is a centre committed to excellent patient care with the aims of expanding the field in the Western Cape through specialist training and research.
Our Adult Nuclear medicine department is based at Groote Schuur Hospital, Observatory. Our Paediatric Nuclear Medicine is based at the Red Cross War Memorial Children’s Hospital, Rondebosch.Both Units get referrals from District and Secondary and tertiary levels as well as referral from patients in the private sector.
Both the units offer the following:
Diagnostic imaging (planar, SPECT, SPECT/CT and PET/CT)
Therapy (I131 for both benign and malignant thyroid disease, I131 mIBG therapy, radiosynoviorthesis, Lutetium 177 DOTATATE for neuroendocrine tumours, Lu177PSMA for prostate cancer and Re188 HEDP for bone pain palliation)
In vitro studies (Glomerular filtration rate measurement, blood volumes measurement, new born thyroid screening program)
The Nuclear Medicine service is available 24 hours a day to all referral centres. Groote Schuur Hospital also has an Osteodensitometry Unit which has been a part of the Nuclear Medicine department for many years and is well established.
